One of these days, I'll post one of my sketches. Regardless of skill level, I'm thankful that I can do a little drawing each month in such a fun atmosphere.
I find that I am no longer an invisible middle-aged fat woman. People either love it and tell me so, hate it and make comments behind my back within earshot (only one so far), or don't know what to think but try really hard not to stare.
I am hoping to hear someone say, "THE CIRCUS IS COMING! THE CIRCUS IS COMING!" To which I will respond, "YOU BET IT IS!"
It's so fun! Add a little make-up and I'm ready for Cirque du Soleil. And don't we all love Cirque du Soleil?
Yet, I'll admit there's a part of me that feels like I may be trying to hard or am too old or will be turned down by potential employers with dress codes. Thankfully, another part of me counters, "Who wants to work in a place with a dress code? If you can't be yourself and make yourself happy, who will and how will you be?"
I look in the mirror now and smile.
I've tapped into the part of me who as a little kid wanted to live in one of those ornate circus trailers and travel from town to town. (We moved so often, I always thought we could have done it with more style). You can see those caravans in the film Freaks and silent films Street Angel and The Man Who Laughs. And I'm always on the lookout for circus-themed books (e.g., Water for Elephants and The Aerialist).
Finally, while I have not been involved in crafts lately, I can see that I am using my creative energy in transforming myself and building a beautiful life here in Austin.
I am thankful that Monica was fearless in her execution of my request. By the way, Monica does knitster Vickie Howell's hair (this was a coincidence and a sort of cosmic sign that I found the right stylist; I love Vickie's hair).
Next stop, Southside Tattoo for a permanent mehndi style wrist tattoo.
